  1. A lot of that has elements some of these stations would have used individually without group graphics... like the station logo ghosted in the background on the full screen shots. These are a huge upgrade. I think some of you guys are having trouble with how simple they are but mobile app style graphics are where the world is headed... the old package had no individuality at all. Somebody at Scripps realized that it can’t be completely one blanket design with no individual elements.

  2. Everyone here is complaining about how awful this looks, but I bet if this had debuted in Europe it'd be hailed as revolutionary.

  3. I think my biggest problem with these graphics is that the lower thirds are using the old Facebook logo that was replaced months ago. Dear Scripps Graphics Hub: The Facebook app logo is now circular. Everyone wanted Scripps to get new graphics. Well, here you go. This is the style that's popular right now. I wouldn't expect many changes to these as it rolls out across the rest of their stations.

  4. Those graphics were alright even though they were pretty much copying CNN's at the time; they were certainly an upgrade to the Hothaus design that McGraw-Hill stations had when they standardized, those were ugly.

  5. Looking at the package seen on WTXL that was to be expected for a market the size of Tallahassee. Hopefully, Scripps will take the package seen on WTXL and improve upon it from there

  6. the graphics in action I don't like the "comment box" at all in the open It's placement is random. I also don't like the use of the comment box during the newscast either. A simple white rectangle would have been fine. I also don't like the font they are using overall this package is a good starting point. hopefully they can make some improvements before it's wider rollout

  7. And the earth-shattering major announcement is... Alan Sealls will be WPMI NBC 15's chief meteorologist starting in January. https://mynbc15.com/news/local/alan-sealls-the-gulf-coasts-chief-meteorologist-joins-nbc-15-as-chief-meteorologist Surprised his non-compete was only for six months after leaving WKRG.

  9. I'll take blue and flat any day. That is a fantastic package. Drop the text crawl-like thing over the L3s, and it's perfect. I don't care if it looks Tegna-like or whatever, I'm just happy the last package will finally bite the dust.

  10. If this is coming to WEWS, they're going to easily have THE WORST graphics package in Cleveland. This is just serviceable, at best. I mean the CNN ripoff package has aged horribly but DAMN!!!!!

  12. And just like that, once Alan Sealls joins WPMI in 2020, the anchors at WPMI will become the most experienced anchor team in the market Mobile. (WEAR over in Pensacola's anchors are the most seasoned...and Bob Solarski is still kicking it 11 years after his "Tom McGee" incident!) It's been a very tumultuous year in the Mobile area.... Bob Grip started the year by stepping down from longtime home WALA. Flash forward to May, and the 50th year of Mel Showers turned into his last as he announced he was stepping down from WKRG. After Mel's "final" newscast (he filled in a few more times), then Alan slipped away when his contract negotiations broke down. Makes me wonder if this has been in the works for quite some time. Right before Alan's bombshell, WPMI and WJTC disappeared from AT&T along with the Sinclair sidecars. A month later, so did WKRG and WFNA along with the rest of Nexstar. Nexstar returned earlier in the fall and it was only a week or two ago that WPMI and WJTC returned. The day after, the "teaser" promos began airing (a coincidence?) Back to WPMI...they have been "short" ever since Kelly Jones left and went over to radio. She was brought over by their now-former GM who both used to work at KCTV in Kansas City. It's gotten even worse with the departures of Jake Dunne, who served as a semi-morning meteorologist (3 days a week & weekends) while Kelly Foster did double duty 2 days a week as anchor and morning met, and as morning/noon anchor when Jake was on the show. Jake left for Wichita and was soon replaced by Kyle Hanson from El Paso. Then Chief met Chris Dunn exited after 4 years "to spend more time with family." Methinks his contract was not renewed and getting Alan on board was kicked into high gear. Kelly Foster has been filling in evenings, and on weekends (or when no one else is available)....WEAR has been filling in with pre-taped forecasts with their weather people, and weather has even been read by the weekend anchors if it's a clear day that just requires the 7-day. So with all of this austerity, could this have all been the reason? Or was Nexstar simply that cheap and needed to pare six figures from their WKRG payroll? (It was rumored that Mel Showers was making that much after that many years...) Viewers were distraught when Alan left WKRG. Will he be able to single-handedly lure viewers over to the forever doormat WPMI? As long as Sinclair doesn't screw this up. 12 years ago, they were reeling (under Clear Channel) when they canned all 3 prime anchors (Kim Mcrea, Drexel Gilbert and Peter Albrecht)...the latter 2 used to work for WKRG, and they do, once again... And an interesting footnote... While Alan was going viral over this..... WPMI was going viral over THIS...

  13. Someone was on YouTube commenting that KXXV is "next". Not sure if he's speaking "insider baseball" or just opining, though. We'll find out soon if it's KXXV or some other station that gets it next.

  14. Apparently Ecuavisa's newscasts got some new graphics, and it looks pretty similar to the CBS O&O graphics.

  15. This acquisition has closed, and there's an extra surprise: Lilly's taking over the CBS affiliation effective tomorrow. Well, they kind of had anyway, in July 2018. At that time, Lilly took over the cable slot — but not the programming operation — that had been home to TV2, which had been the islands' cable CBS affiliate since 2009. (News2 is still being produced...and airing on cable channel...4.) CBS USVI does air some news features, which as you might have guessed are produced in Erie.

  17. First impression: Eh. I feel like a lot of it has to do with WTXL's presentation and implementation of the look. The music is good, but I hope they have faster, more serious cuts. The graphics are okay (animate WAY TOO SLOW), as well, but could use some refinements. Is WTXL always this sleepy or did they change things up with the launch? I'm a huge fan of the Tegna look and sound, which I think was executed perfectly. I see where Scripps was trying to go...but they missed the mark. Hopefully things can be improved upon.

  18. I agree...it doesn't work for Tallahassee. I cringe because it's coming for markets like Cleveland, Detroit, and even NYC possibly. And that's assuming that the individual stations can't (or won't) fix the animation issues.

  19. I'm surprised they kept the bug white, the logo and time/temp gets easily hidden when the video or picture playing behind it is also white...kinda defeats the purpose of having a bug. Too much slow animation happening on the L3's, they're trying to grab the viewer's attention but it just feels like the movement is lagging. Dang, Scripps should have gotten TVNewsTalk's community to be their focus group, we can certainly come up with something better than this.

  20. Watching WTXL a few things I notice: 1) The L3's animate slowly. Almost too slow. Maybe that's the point to draw your attention to it, but it takes its sweet time. 2) The music is incredibly chill and simple. Utilizes a lot of chimes and simple signatures. It's reminiscent of the Weather Channel. Certainly not music that would work well in fast-paced markets. 3) Weather graphics, I think, are an improvement. The problem is none of the icons animate. 4) Full screen slate is literally a slate. Zero movement. Upper banner too similarly matches the background, so it doesn't catch the eye. It should be white. 5) The biggest problem this package has is a lack of movement. Everything is very stagnant. Only the stingers and L3 seem to have some semblance of movement. I can't fathom Scripps spent months and months of designing stagnant slates.

  21. You can only have a package that looks like the old one for so long... 7 years later those design elements just aren’t fully workable anymore. You could always have the burned orange V1 Graphics if you really want... this new package certainly moves things forward rather than back to the dark days of late 2009.

  22. Too much blue I say, looks like if TEGNA and NBC O&O graphics screwed around and made a baby, this is what the baby would look like. A little bland and boring, but I guess this is what standardization looks like. Maybe the transitions, sound effects and music will make up for it....or maybe not.

  25. You can have 2D graphics, but these are too simplified. Nexstar is a good example of using a mixture of 2D and 3D and they make it work really well. Even Morris (especially WTVQ) does a good job with "flater" graphics but still include 3D elements. Hearst, arguably, does the finest job with its mixture of 2D and 3D. Using 2D graphics can be a slippery slope. It is either executed well or it looks awful. As I said before, these Scripps gfx look really tired. Just my opinion...

  28. Some of the elements vaguely remind me of the graphics WLS has for some reason... it’s a very nice look. The larger stations will implement it better than this undoubtedly. This is a small market station and the implementation is done accordingly.

  29. Agree, going to this from what WLEX uses, will be a downgrade I think.

  30. And the new music package. Sounds like they only used one cut for the whole show. It was pretty laid-back. But definitely had that Stephen Arnold sound. Almost weather channel esque.

  33. I seem to recall that this was the first Affiliate package CBS News offered to stations in the Dan Rather era... WJBK Detroit used it for Newscast bumps during their "2 is the One: NewsBreakers" era... Up I-75, WEYI Saginaw/Flint/Bay City also used this Affiliate package..

  36. Another group of the Sinclair shells are back....the MPS Media stations. https://www.cordcuttersnews.com/att-re-adds-4-local-cw-nbc-affiliates-to-directv-att-tv-now/ That just leaves Second Generation of Iowa (KFXA), Waitt (KMEG), Tennessee Broadcasting (WNAB), Mercury Broadcasting (KMTW) and Roberts Broadcasting (KMTR). Interesting facts: The Waitt company that owns the KMEG license has no ties to the company that once owned it. One of their former stations, WFXL was once owned by the original Waitt who was acquired by Raycom, who divested it to Barrington when they merged with Liberty (since they owned WALB). Mercury Broadcasting was the founder of WJTC in Pensacola. They formed an LMA with Clear Channel who owned WPMI, then a FOX affiliate. They became a legal duopoly in 2000, and BOTH were shelled to Deerfield in 2012 with their sale by Newport Television since Sinclair already owned WEAR and WFGX. Back to Mercury, who Clear Channel recruited when Paramount wanted out of running KSCC (now KMTW) and ran them out of KSAS. The arrangement lasts into this day through Clear Channel, Newport, and now Sinclair.

  37. The overall style is very similar to the well-known "Team to Watch" KNXT promos from a few years later. I wonder if they were produced by the same company that had switched clients in the meantime? (I remember reading that the KNXT promos were done by Collier Concepts.)
