  1. I keep pushing the new 3 logo in this darn elevator to get WKYC on the screen and nothing happens! Lol!

  2. Good luck with that. That's like telling McDonalds to have some local flavor to it. If it's corporate it's corporate.

  3. We really need to speak up to Tegna management and tell 'em we don't like changes on their local stations and demand that things on our stations need to be brought back and left alone. example: Leave the current WKYC logo alone, don't change it. Next, Reinstate "The Spirit of Texas" slogan back to WFAA, KHOU, and spread the Spirit slogan to Tegna Texas stations, and finally... get some better news sets from FX Group and/or BDI. Not some Tegna-Set-In-A-Box, and reinstate news themes (ex: KUSA News Package, Propulsion, The Tower, etc.) drop the C Clarity and gets some better news graphics.

  4. The Watch Our Spirit Now promos debuted in April '84. That May they ran a 2-page spread ad in the St. Petersburg Times TV supplement with some of the copy from the ad series...

  5. More or less, this logo re-appeared in the early 90s when Multimedia assumed majority ownership of WKYC. Back then, even NBC's affiliates played into this style. How they ever went to the "Proud N" and Serif Gothic from this is mind-boggling. And then there was the awful programming during that era when even Fred Silverman couldn't save them.... I've started a new thread in the Graphics section about the impending "3"....i'm all for moving discussion over there as WKYC's relaunch nears closer....

  6. This is probably when they launched the "Watch Our Spirit Now" promos with the "Newswatching Out For You" slogan. But as a newscast close from 1984 shows, WXFL didn't stop using the soft instrumental close to close the newscasts. They had so many graphic iterations of promos during The Spirit of Tampa Bay's time. They had the pre-call letter change multi colored logo which was on the trucks, the yellow logo with black background on the mics, and the gold logo with blue background after the call letter change. I think I saw 5 different show promo graphics for the station from 1982-1985 to when they went to the Gannett knockoff graphics and they went with Power News for newscasts and Turn To News for promos.

  7. In Mobile, MeTV has been on 5.3 since 2011 (it was RTN/RTV before). Nexstar signed on a duplicate "Laff" affiliation on 5.4 (since WALA already had it on 10.3), and Court TV replaced Laff on WKRG 5.4. Antenna TV has been on a station with a questionable on-air signal (WPAN-TV). Wouldn't surprise me if Nexstar pulls the plug on that and puts it on one of their area stations instead.

  8. Some KWTV goods. This is the TV9 I remember growing up with before moving north. (And we won't discuss my mother's seeming infatuation with Mitch Jelniker...)

  9. Makes me wonder if they are going to drop it on their other stations acquired from Media General. And it makes more sense since Antenna TV will soon be owned by Nexstar when the Tribune deal closes. Many of these MeTV affiliations stem from a deal that replaced RTN (later RTV and now RetroTV) in 2011 after Luken lost virtually all of their programming to MeTV and Antenna.

  10. Bah, I like that new WKYC logo. It's simple and to the point, tells you everything you need to know. Hey, when you see that 3, you know it's coming direct from Cleveland. You know what's boring? Those blue-and-white Circle 7s, those suckers are everywhere. You see one of those, it could coming from any of the nine zillion Channel 7s around the nation that were too lazy to come up with something unique. And since I had no clue what the current WKYC logo looked like, I went to their website. It looks like a ne'er-do-well 3 leaning against a wall while a shady peacock looks around the corner for unsuspecting rubes to mug. Hardly trustworthy, I'd say.

  11. This might be one of my biggest finds this year: The Spirit of Tampa Bay is Gari! It's rare to find unknown Gari works, but this appears to be one of them. It also appears there is a v2 of this image campaign that debuted in 1983. From Walt Belcher's April 11, 1983 Tampa Tribune TV column:

  13. I noticed the WFLA GFX had similar vibes to WWMT’s 1996 pack. I believe both were VDO jobs? Take a look at the L3 similarities: They also had that “camera lens” graphic as well that I associate with the 90s.

  14. Man that WGGB aircheck was awesome. The Dairy Mart silo building in the commercial at the tail end is in my hometown about a mile from my house! lol

  18. Thank you for the kind words. Thank you to everyone else who echoed similar sentiments as well! The copyright concern debacle was an interesting one in that NBCU's person(s) chose a number of clips that ran the gamut of what I had uploaded. They included a few of the complete newscasts from Telemundo O&Os KTMD & KXTX to the sign-off of the low-powered WBGH in Binghamton, NY circa 2006 (Because of the peacock on the static image? I don't know...). The few attempts I made to get reversals on decisions regarding a couple of videos were rebuffed. I also had a lot on my plate at the time on the personal and professional front and just let it go. I still have pretty much everything that I uploaded on the original version anyway, so it's just a matter of time before some of it starts to return. As for a dedicated site - stay tuned for news on that front. Both of the sites you mention are great and an inspiration regarding what I would like to accomplish with the content I have down the line.

  19. Take a look right here. Why does WKYC have to go for a circle logo? They are being a copycat.

  20. Nexstar is also dropping MeTV on Nashville's WKRN 2.2. They're replacing it for Bounce TV. With MeTV moving to HC2-owned WJFB 44.1. WCMH is replacing MeTV for CourtTV.
