  1. Hey, I know that this topic can often stray into the political, but the political opinions that result often can become germane to the topic at hand.

  2. The current EWN music is officially 20 years old and still sounds as good as new! Here is what WABC-TV looked like back in late August / early September of 1999 when it switched over to the current cuts of Gari’s “Eyewitness News” and, briefly, became “ABC7 Eyewitness News”. 5pm News short open, talent open, bumper: https://youtu.be/VMjL2FswYeU “Coming Up” promo (from a few months later in May 2000): https://youtu.be/muESKwhgafk

  3. It's what kind of ticks me off about this forum. If you don't like Trump or whatever, that's a valid thought, I think a lot of people don't really like him. But a lot of people here seem to dislike the idea of anything like playing the national anthem, because of whatever reason it might be. I don't think playing the SSB is anywhere near nationalism, and it really bugs me that people think this way, that somehow being proud of where you live is a bad thing.

  4. I'm not gonna lie, it's pretty annoying that we've gotten to the point where our national anthem has become a hot-button political issue. If you like having it played on TV, you're a fascist, and if you don't, you're a communist. There's no pleasing anyone anymore, is there?

  7. I know that being an atheist in some quarters is considered enlightened but the human body is a complicated organism containing specific parts that do specific jobs. Kind of hard to believe that your eyes, ears, nose, circulatory system, digestive system, brain and self-repair properties just kind of happened on their own. I don't know if you realize this, but being an atheist is like saying that if you throw a bunch of sand (glass), some unrefined petroleum (plastic) and chunks of metal ore (copper, gold) at a wall enough times, it would randomly arrange itself into an iPhone, complete with all the computer programming necessary to be an operable device including internal power source. In other words, believing in a creator is much more plausible than believing that pond scum gestating long enough could turn itself into the complicated beings that we all are. God, mother, country, national anthem! It's about time people stopped entertaining Marxist nonsense.

  8. It's not a political discussion Roly. It's a discussion about the broadcasting of the national anthem, and the history behind it. The fact that a station owner or group chooses to play the national anthem DOES NOT make that group or owners automatically part of any one political party or belief. Nothing wrong with showing we are all proud Americans. If Roly wants to decide what threads should be locked, then he should apply to be a moderator.

  10. Frankly, I'm not sure when WBBM hit rock bottom, but the Johnson/State duo immediately preceded their most successful period in a quarter century. Anne slowly got demoted off newscasts until Rob was going solo all evening. Meanwhile, CBS primetime was blowing up, and WMAQ was dealing with the tandem troubles of a rocky 10pm anchor change & The Jay Leno Show. WBBM became an unchallenged #2 for most of the 2009-10 season. In addition to a new midday anchor team (Porterfield/Tellez), they used this momentum to hire Kate Sullivan, reinstate a normal morning news, and reunite Bill and Walter. All good ideas, but then NBC5 recovered, and most decisions since to stop the bleeding just further flung them into the abyss. At 10, WBBM typically trails WGN by a few tenths of a point, both settling in the 2.5-3.0 range. WMAQ beats that by a point or two, and WLS sits between a 6 and 7. At 9pm, WGN typically beats FOX32 with like 4.0 to the low 2's.

  13. You weren't around in the '80s when few broadcast stations were 24/7 and nearly every stations played the anthem at sign-on and sign-off, were you?

  14. Unlike others who seem to hate living in this country, I personally think that playing the national anthem is a welcome sight on television. We should be proud for the freedoms that we have living in the United States of America, and we shouldn't be afraid to show it for a few moments during the broadcast day. I doubt those of you who are opposed to this will even be watching television during the time the anthem plays. We'll see if any other broadcasters follow suit!

  15. It's good to see station groups bringing this back. It's one of the lost traditions of broadcasting that disappeared when stations began operating 24/7. I'll always remember in the early 90s when WUAB would sign on in the morning (I watched them before school) and how they would go from their test pattern into signing on. Here's their test pattern with their weird hybrid tone they used...

  17. We've seen this type of thing done at other stations, a comedian's daily take on the news. I scoff at those, as those personalities are serving as 'formal' anchors on existing newscasts. No one has referred to this is a newscast, and it's not replacing a current newscast. That makes a difference, to me.

  20. Good Afternoon America was probably the best. That said, over the last few years ABC has gone heavy on the acronym, ditching most references to "Good Morning America" in favor of "G-M-A." So, in that sense, the fact that they came up with 'GMA3' is not terribly surprising. (Not far off from GMA Day.) GMA3 sounds like the strain of a virus your doctor would vaccinate you for.

  22. Jamie Simpson, the Chief Meteorologist at WKEF/WRGT Dayton who was made famous for during an EF 4 tornado hitting the Dayton area telling viewers complaining about missing The Bachelorette due to storm coverage “I’m done with you people” was arrested this morning for OVI (Ohio’s term for DUI, DWI aka drunk driving). www.whio.com/news/crime--law/meteorologist-arrested-for-ovi-miamisburg/RdipSddDy1cKHJ3YzawlJK/amp.html Here’s the kicker though, the ND from WKEF/WRGT told the other Dayton media outlets that he was already unemployed before the incident occurred this morning. His profile was on the station’s website yesterday. He hasn’t been on air in 2 weeks but something smells fishy. Simpson was fired from his Chief Met position at WHIO back in 2014 after he blew a .228 and swerved and hit a tree.
