  1. Strong debut. The blues give the show an evening feel, not too different from the blues of WNT and NN. Norah has a commanding presence and brings her own gravitas. This is a show I would watch. The nod to Murrow was just as much for the CBS staff as it was for the audience. She can give a 20 second nod to the show's history in the debut episode and still establish the show as her own. They aren't mutually exclusive.

  2. I thought Norah's debut was excellent. As an employee of various CBS affiliates since 1996, I think this is the best Evening News has looked and felt in quite a while.

  3. Of course it wasn’t necessary. It wasn’t necessary for them to change the lights to blue or for Norah to wear a pantsuit either. It was a choice. This is nothing new, by the way. When Charlie, Diane, and David each took over WNT, they all cited Peter Jennings in one way or another. For people who work in that business, it’s an act of respect. As I said, the 20 second nod to the show’s legacy was just as much for the CBS News staff as it was for the audience.

  4. They went back to the original Jeff Glor look with the show logo in a horizontal banner, but the red lower-thirds have been turned blue. (Glor's logo eventually got moved into a box on the left side.) I do think the blue looks way better, though still overly simple and uninspired. I'm surprised they went so heavy on the New York City skyline for a broadcast that is leaving New York in the next couple months. Perhaps it's to make the transition to Washington even more obvious. But the buildings do look nice in that studio. At least twice, they put Norah's name on a lower-third. I'm not used to seeing a network evening anchor have their name show up in anything other than a logo during his or her broadcast. Super nerdy detail but this is TVNT so I had to bring it up. The broadcast seemed to have more urgency. It felt tired under Glor.

  5. What a f4cking idiot. How do these anchors still not realize that they shouldn’t say things like this when they’re mic’d whether they think they’re live or not?

  6. No sign of CBSN Chicago in sight, but WBBM is using some of the full screen graphics for local stories. Also, while it doesn't match the streaming look, they tested an updated 7-Day over this past weekend. While we're at it, let's throw in the ticker and bug adjustments at WCBS, too. 7. My broader point wasn’t really about you (though originally I misunderstood you to be in that crowd and that’s why it was written that way, actually clearly you are not) rather it was wondering about all those neat people who come out from cracks in the walls when someone says the “F-word”... then they retreat until it is said again... their silly shock never ceases to amaze me...

  8. I will say lots of prayers for Jim next Monday. Hard to imagine a leader on News4 Washington is gone two years later.

  9. Dick Brennan did the recorded sports report this morning. Did he do the sports report last night?

  10. Kari Lake is a pathetic example of journalism. I refuse to watch Fox 10 here in Phoenix until she's GONE. I've had the unpleasant task of helping her at a local health food store. She was rude, pushy, and thought she owned the place. The temptation to smack her was oh so great.

  11. There are WAY too many OTS shots. It seems to be the only thing they used in that show. With Glor, they insisted on using the same monitor effects shot over and over. I don't get it. You see more variety of shots in a typical local news broadcast. When Pelley anchored I felt like they used the studio well. The new lighting and feel of the set differentiates it nicely from CTM. I don't really understand all the NYC imagery they're using considering the broadcast is moving to DC soon. I really like the updates to the theme music so far.

  12. That open looks like a small market tried to rip off a station with an actual decent graphics package. The field of view on the logo shots just looks odd. The motion just stops abruptly and out of sync with other movements... Looks rushed and cheap (like the rest of CBS' graphics) Don't even get me started on those lower thirds. Looks like a template they bought off one of the many stock graphics sites out there.

  13. I'm just happy the 7-day is a full 7 day and not a 5 day with 2 extra days stacked on top one another. That said, the free floating text for the weather headers has got to stop.

  15. It’s a lot cleaner than previous package. However, I’m seeing a lack of creativity, I wonder what the open will look like to be honest. They shine there when it comes to new graphics.

  16. In addition, some promos have transitioned to the similar, flat look. CBS has typically operated on a 3-year cycle ('10, '13, and '16), with new packages debuting sometime during the warmer months. 20190701_224054(1).mp4

  20. I don't get all the KYW hate either. Ukee and new-Jessica are fine. Kate Bilo is very good, as is Don Bell. I'll admit the field reporters vary wildly in quality, but they're just reporting the facts on the ground, not doing in-depth analysis. I prefer the more upbeat coverage. I don't need if-it-bleeds-it-leads and over-dramatizing everything. I think what's killing them is that familiarity is what drives local ratings and high turnover is killing them there. Especially in the mornings, although I was thrilled when Meisha Johnson moved on. I know guys loved her because she was supposed to be a "bombshell" but I found her cloying, annoying and fake. Rahel Solomon was a huge upgrade over her predecessor, but now she's gone. I don't get why everyone here seems to hate Jim Donovan so much. Just because he's not in the traditional anchor mode? I like that's off-beat and has a personality. Too many stiffs behind the anchor desk. I switch between Ch. 3 and Ch. 10 in the morning, and honestly, except for money spent on production, I don't see a huge difference in their quality. Vai is a better newsman than Jim Donovan? How so? Bill Henly is likable, but so is Katie Fehlinger. I don't get the purpose 2 weather people at the same time serves. NBC10 news is prettier, but I don't see why that makes it better.

  21. You’ve suggested shutting down or outsourcing KYW and WTXF’s news operations several times. It was never “on the table” to begin with — no one at CBS, Fox, or at the local level has brought it up. You’re the only person who (stupidly, I must add) suggested shutting down a news operation.

  22. They desperately need one. I actually like WCBS’ & WJZ news sets. CBS needs to start dumping a ton of money into KYW.

  23. I would like to remind everybody that Monday of next week, it would be two years ago, July 22... it was the day that Washingtonian's lost WRC NBC 4's Jim Vance. Take the time to remember him, and re-look back at his career next week.

  24. Yet she won't get fired, given who her employer is and also that it's Phoenix. She's untouchable at KSAZ because her actions aren't enough to hurt her or the station's brand.
