Longtime Anchor and Assistant News Director from WAPA-TV in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Guillermo Jose Torres is stepping down from the anchor desk next Monday at 5:00pm. He has been lead anchor of Noticentro a las 5 (NewsCenter at 5) for 43 years. When Carl Wallenda fell to his death crossing two building in San Juan a few decades ago, he lead the coverage of what was then, the cutting edge live report. His unique tone of voice and what the ladies call, the beautiful blue eyes, have made him a staple figure in Puerto Rico television. Yes, anchors come and go, but the TV News business in Puerto Rico appears to be very stable compared to the Mainland, this is a once in a blue moon occurence. During his career, he anchored the also top rated Noticentro a las 10pm for several years before stepping down the 10pm News in 2008. He currently anchors Noticentro a las 11:00am and Noticentro a las 5:00pm. No word yet on who will succeed him at the 5pm News. And I believe he should be placed up there in the hall of fame with Chuck Scarborough, Jim Gardner, Rob Jennings for being at a station for more than 30 years.

WAPA was once owned by GE for a long time during the 1980-1990 decade.

During the special broadcast, the Guiness World Book of Records recognized Mr. Torres as the only person in the world for having the longest tenure as an Anchor/Reporter at the same TV Station. His award spans 43 years and 10 months.554014_10151585130338333_1219366526_n.jpg
