This was rumored for so long. Anyone know why she left WESH 2 in the first place and why it took so long for her to arrive at Channel 9?

She was offered a better contract at WFTV and her contract with WESH had a one year non-compete clause.

Martie Salt's connections to Orlando are deep (her son was born here) She left Central Florida in 1994 after 15 years in the market (two at WESH, 13 at WFTV) She went to the ABC affiliate in Tampa for nine years, then returned to WFTV in 2003 She was brought back to help WFTV, which was struggling in the ratings

I kinda feel like she's overrated??

I agree but I can't help but wonder if I have been watching at the wrong time. Maybe I'm wrong but there were one or two interviews/features I read about her made me think she's more of a socialite and that's what's getting her coverage.

Also her twitter picture rubs me the wrong way. I understand people frequently win Emmy's for devastation and horrific stories but the image of her posing with it seems a bit uncouth given the story. She won the award for breaking news coverage on a horrific daycare car crash that left a four year old dead and a dozen injured.

I feel like she's the epitome of what has helped kill local TV news: she just wants to be on TV. Doesn't really care about the content. Probably plays next to no role in putting any of the shows she anchors together. I guess that's fine, and it's not like she is the only one. Oh well, she has a following. Good for her. She will enjoy those nice Cox paychecks.

Maybe it not her but management they like what they see. Remember Cox does alot of research, so for Cox to poach talent from a competing station is nothing new. They say she has a fairly amount of social media viewers in the market. Yes, the business of television news has changed, and now they want bombshell anchors instead of somebody with brains. That the trends that these media companies want. Cox knows what there getting this is nothing new for any media company in today world.

Spot on.

I wonder how long it will take them to poach Jim Payne as well? It's always a big gamble to poach a big name talent from the competition with the hopes of boosting your ratings since there is no guarantee that it will be successful. Also, a lot of what made WESH very competitive with WFTV was the combo of Martha and Jim.

If Jim went to WFTV, then the news competition in Central Florida would be OVER. Completely OVER. It would just be like WSB Channel 2.

The big loser in this move is Bob Opsahl because he is losing his long-time TV partner, Martie Salt at 6:00pm and they've done a whole lot of newscasts together over the years and even with Bob's scaling back of hours to just 4:00 and 6:00 and now, 5:00-6:30 p.m., it was always Martie and Bob at 6:00pm. Really sad to see this pairing broken up for Martha and Bob, instead of what is supposed to be, Martie and Bob.

After all, its what made WFTV's 6pm newscast, the highest-rated newscast of the day during the weekdays. Don't be surprised if ratings slightly fall because of this.

You have to wonder because over the last few years WFTV has shaken up it anchor bench let go back when Marla Weech was moved to 10pm because viewers didn't care for her. WFTV was on top was getting hammered by WESH and WKMG had some good pool of talent. Bob Jordan brought back Martie Tucker Salt from WFTS and things were back to normal. After 20 years, Marla leaves WFTV and goes back to WKMG for a couple of years. Barbara West leaves WFTV as well.

Then you have some anchors changes moving Greg Warmoth and Vanessa Echols move from the AM gig to 4pm and you add Vanessa Welch to 5pm and you move Bob Opshal off the 11pm and keep him on the 5&6pm newscast now Martie will be doing Noon and filling in at 5pm while Vanessa Welch is on maternity leave. Martie will be apart of the station community arm.

Meanwhile over at WESH Wendy Chioji was replaced by Martha Sugalski and Wendy was moved to the 4&6pm while Martha did 4,5,11pm and finally all the newscast when Wendy left after 20 years. Will Greg Warmoth be Bob's replacement? There Jorge Estevez who anchors the 10pm will he move up?

The moral of the story is as you get older there somebody younger will replace you. I'm surprise that Martie Salt is 58 almost 60 which she doesn't look her age and Martha 45 another one who doesn't look her age. Down the road some younger chick will replace Martha as as they say the beat will go on.
