NFL Reform

I've been meaning to post this concern since the Ray Rice scandal from earlier in the fall.

I think the NFL is broken, systemically - because financially its all great. We are all paying for it. In our cable bills. 1995 is repeating itself with affiliation switches because they don't want to pay the networks so they can then funnel the money back to the NFL. (Expect more to happen, is my prediction.) The "news" at the sports networks are not even objective anymore. Sure if you want to be a fanboy with opinions is one thing, but not choosing to report stories to protect "your guy" is just insane.

So here is my idea for the NFL (which is only a dream because it will never, ever happen at least for a half a generation.)

  1. Eliminate rules and deregulate the sport The NFL sometimes called the No Fun League has a reputation with too many rules. Nothing is worse for a game to be slower than a snail drag race for silly flags for silly calls. Some of the rules seem to be bureaucratic like municipal government where so many people can interpret the rules in so many ways. I'm on the camp of screw the idea of everything needing to "be fair." Safety for the players can be another argument, but they might become "mothering" the men on the field, if you asked me.
  2. TV Timeouts should be regulated. Like in hockey, TV timeouts happen twice per period per NHL rules. The reason why so many people get antsy both at the stadium and at home is how games are becoming more and more slower and slower. Even people at the stadium loose attention because of the constant breaks
  3. Give back the networks rights As many people on this board knows, the NFL owns all the rights to the production and the programming. I believe, once upon a time the network had rights too, but now the NFL controls it all. The networks have probably lead the marching band, but now the NFL leads the marching band and now the networks follow them. There is nothing wrong with the league having their own production unit or having some media group, because if it weren't for NFL films, football in America wouldn't exist the way it does now. An earlier thread (or shoutbox) started by I think Ryan/rkolsen from last year referring to how affiliates can reuse the footage for their sports block is beyond manipulation of the First Amendment.

3a Allow the networks to choose what they want to put out. I said in the shoutbox, it seems like the networks are being used to deliver the NFL's propaganda (campaigns.) Another thing is how there is no individuality of the network, such as promoting other games by the competing networks by name. I think for many viewers of a certain demographic would find it very odd. There is a time and place to reference competitors (such as a death of a prominent figure) but not every Sunday afternoon.

4. A fire erupted in the newsroom of the Sports division. A firewall needs to be rebuilt between the news operations and the entertainment side of the sports division of all networks. One example is ESPN, they got all these talk shows and their opinions could be very well influencing any reporting of any real news such as a wife getting beaten up vs. an inflated ball during a playoff game. Drama is the worse offender especially in some of the production, but still this type of production has gone way too far for the NFL.

5. Stop charging so much! Why does the NFL need so much money? The NFL is technically an organization that is owned by 32 other companies, ie the franchises. Other than NFL Films and enforcement and other units that seem to not perform according to the scandals this past season, why should people pay so much to see a game? What about the cable customers who don't watch football and are getting charged left and right in the retrans? Why are long time affiliates having to drop CBS, or Fox or other networks if it keeps up only to pay for rights for a mismanaged organization?

I think I have listed enough reasons for a reform of the NFL, and this is my opinion based on the facts I know.

What other affiliation switches or acquisations could happen besides what has happened already or has been aborted? Even with the current Benson family infighting over control of the Saints/Pelicans, I just can't see Fox taking on a slow to recover New Orleans for football alone and if they really wanted back in St. Louis they would have kept KTVI to bein with.

Even thinking of AFC markets CBS could enter, the only one that stands out is San Diego and there seems to be a case of Midwest holding onto the KFMB stations a bit too long as the rumor of CBS buying them has circulated for some time. I mean, they could go after Graham for Houston/Jacksonville but that sounds too far-fetched.

I'm on the camp of Stranger Things Have Happened. Don't underestimate the networks
