New WKBN Graphics/Set on the way?

This is a screenshot of WKBN's recently released "Storm Team" mobile app...

Notice the two logos....the top being the current logo, and below the WKBN 27 Weather one. It has a lot of similarities to the in-house graphics launched at KIMT, WIAT and KOIN...

It would be a shame to retire their old JCB package, but that looks like what could eventually happen, as it's happened at KOIN and KIMT.

It's hard to tell if the set modifications are underway, but some eagle-eyed viewers on WKBN's facebook page have posed the question. It would have to undergo some changes since it's so tied into the current package....and since WYTV's presence is limited to television and some web, it's hard to tell since they don't stream their station.

As for the purple on their website, it's in support of Chief Meterologist Don Guthrie who is battling Pancreatic Cancer, and Purple is the awareness group's official color.

Haha, Facebook hmm I wonder who noticed that (coughs, hint hint). I noticed it in Sept 2014 they took the current set back-drop moved over to the weather stand up area. How I noticed was the sliver/gray part of Weather Stand up area is still there.

It seems like this is kind of a LIN thing to do. KXAN has had news logos change while the weather logo stays the same and weather logos change when nothing else did. Right now, they have one logo in their version of this app and on the morning news ticker, and another on the set and everywhere else on their graphics.

At least it looks like the "27" is going to remain a part of their branding. IMHO, this is what they SHOULD have done in Birmingham with WIAT.

WKBN's long history in the Mahoning Valley means their call letters have value to them (even though the call letters themselves were sequentially assigned to their former parent radio station decades ago), so the WIAT approach could work here, ESPECIALLY by using "WKBN" in it's legacy form, like John Christopher Burns did.

Since WYTV doesn't stream their newscasts, and their presence has been limited since WKBN took them over, any potential changes going on over there? Even when I've been to Ohio, their signal is difficult to pick up from my location, while WFMJ and WKBN come in clear as a bell.

This is probably speculation but I'm guessing with the sale of LIN to Media General that WYTV is shut down and "transferred" to WKBN. I do believe that the branding on "WYTV" will change to "ABC Youngstown". The question is how will WKBN incorporate its three new subchannels WHEN WYTV shuts down.

As far as the graphics, my guess is that with WKBN using a bluish logo, they're probably going to use a revised variamt of the KOIN graphics but use newer cuts of Enforcer instead.

I could see WYTV going away altogether....with WYFX remaining on 27.2 (and going back to HD) and the former WYTV programming moving to WYFX (and possibly changing the call letters to WKBN-CD) This way, everything could be unified under the WKBN brand....

But it looks like everything is going to remain status quo because the current arrangement is allowable because WYTV only has an SSA and NOT a JSA, which is what has to be unwound under the upcoming rules

WKBN has been using their weather center as their secondary set now for about two months. How long does it take for them to construct a new set? Also, WYTV's Len Rome is set to retire as the morning anchor on Daybreak and Lin has an AM Anchor position posted for fill the void, so I doubt they plan on scrapping WYTV. I also noticed that all old New Vision stations that are now Lin Media stations have similar sets and graphics (WJCL, WIAT, KOIN ect) Hope they don't mess this up.

If that is their entire studio, that is such a big mistake. It looks so bad. I can't see a single person at KBN that would like

That studio in some ways looks like a massive downgrade compared to WKBN's current set, which has actually aged very well. I think WFMJ's dated news set (it was redone around 2006 but repainted a few times) is actually starting to look good but that's not saying much.

What constitutes as 'virtual reality'? I have never actually seen a station use a chrome key set other than college stations

In the US, there aren't many. The Morris group (notably, WWAY and WXXV) use virtual sets. I know KECY does as well. Quite a few stations will use virtual sets for chroma key standups (KSAZ and KPNX come to mind).

Virtual sets are far more common elsewhere in the world (and there are some gorgeous examples of virtual sets).
