KFMB reporter Larry Himmel passes away

This news literally came out of nowhere for San Diegans. Veteran broadcaster Larry Himmel passed away Wednesday night at the age of 68 due to complications from brain cancer. Larry was one of a kind in San Diego, what he meant to us cannot be described in a few short words- he was that special. His reports were one of a kind...quirky, fun, informative but most of all a great story-teller. There was nothing that Larry could not take on, from wacky feature stories, to covering sports, to forecasting the weather- the man was literally the jack of all trades at KFMB. His name might be familiar to most outside of San Diego, when his reporting outside of his burning home in 2007 during the wildfires, was aired across the country-and the world for that matter. San Diegan's saw him at his most vulnerable during that time, but also saw him at his strongest and over the years we went by as he took us along the journey to rebuilding his home. Larry's passing comes 11 months after the passing of another San Diego icon, Loren Nancarrow- who also passed away from brain cancer. I'm at a loss at what else to say. Anyone looking to get into journalism would really benefit from taking a page out Larry's book on how to be a great storyteller. RIP Larry

How i was taken a back by this news when i woke up this morning....

I loved how KNSD devoted a decent amount of time to Larry this afternoon, and morning as well. With Gene Cubbison doing a piece with Marty Levin and Susan Taylor describing how amazing he was. Another person that i was impressed that took time out to explain how awesome Larry was is Bill Ritter of WABC, of course a SDSU alum, and worked at KNSD. He just shared some amazing words at how genuine of a soul he was. I think that shined brightly when he stood in front of his house as it was burning back in the 2007 firestorm. I think thats the lasting image for me that i will remember of him and his amazing work.

RIP.
