KOIN New Graphics and Branding

Looks really good! And, like CircleSeven said, it's always great to hear stations breaking the mold in terms of music (as long as they do a good job of it).

On another note, maybe this will silence the "revert to the 2008 package" crowd. :p

I wonder if any other of the ex-New Vision stations (WKBN/WYTV, WIAT, etc) will get a similar version of the new KOIN gfx. Hell, I would like to see a few of LIN stations get these graphics. However, I do have a question. With KOIN getting a major overhaul, is LIN/MG planning on spinning off KOIN along with the conflict markets?

LIN has been planning these upgrades for a while now.

KOIN along with many of the New Vision stations have been "hubbed." KOIN's master control is based out of Indianapolis' pod 3. Along with WTHI 10.1/ 10.2, WLUK, and WDTN.

Akzidenz Grotesk is a great typeface, but they really shouldn't be using the extended variant in the lower-thirds if they insist on cramming all that text in there. Extended typefaces look like crap when you try to compress them, as evidenced in the video from KOIN.

I'd also rethink using the light weight...KTLA uses the regular weight with relatively small lower-third sizes and it does a lot for readability.

With KOIN, KSNW, WJCL and KIMT, getting new graphics, and I know the first three listed received new sets, not sure if KIMT did or not, I can't wait to see what WIAT in Birmingham looks like when they are done with their changes. The video I linked was dated April 1st and it tells about the impending changes at the station. Hopefully it will be all finished up by May Sweeps! Here’s to LIN investing in their stations.... at least before they sell off some of them. :awesome:

Edit: I forgot to mention KHON also got a new set and graphics! Seems like LIN did invest a lot into the New Vision Stations.

Does this mean that WKBN/WYTV will be next in line for graphics upgrades? I could see WKBN using an orange variant of this graphics package with the NG4 version of Enforcer and WYTV using the KOIN package, Unexpected v.2 and all.

After I recorded this, I bet so...they're not using the same font they had been using

Boo, Helvetica. That just looks so ugly. And they changed the background of the super from that blue-ish purple gradient to a solid white.

Worse....that's Arial. It's a shame they didn't copy the font to the new CG.

At least the lower thirds finally fill the screen. When they went HD, it looked like they kept their existing lower thirds, which were only designed for 4x3 use...as you can see in this clip.

I'm hoping WKBN doesn't ditch this package for something more generic. It's probably got another year or two left in it....seeing how the previous look lasted 12 years during the Grapevine/Gocom/Piedmont era.....

It's actually one of the few more recent John Christopher Burns designs that has staying power. It demonstrates such excellent use of typography, too. (Including the WKBN letterforms which were taken from the Art Deco lettering on the station entrance.)

I also noticed around November of last year that all the logo bugs moved out of the 4:3 safe zone. It didn't really look right until they revised the L3s. To be honest, that last look did last 12 years and was refreshed MANY times. But, at least WKBN refreshed it compared to WFMJ who prior to using NBC Look G in 2012 used its last package for EIGHT YEARS with hardly any updates. I'm probably going to sound crazy but I will admit that WFMJ's Look G graphics blows WKBN's JCbD graphics out of the water. To me, Look G feels big city and expensive whereas WKBN's graphics now have a kinda long in the tooth look. Hopefully LIN (or MG) dosen't screw up the next package for WKBN/WYTV.
