KTVU's major mistake

KTVU is in some hot water tonight after airing what they believed to be the names of the crew members involved in the Asiana Flight 214 disaster. Claiming they had been "confirmed by the NTSB", the station reported the crew had names like "Sum Ting Wong", "Wi Tu Lo", "Ho Lee Fuk", and "Bang Ding Ow", names that most people could recognize as being fake.

The station has released an apology, however it maintains that these names were confirmed with the NTSB prior to air.

UPDATE: TVNT member JTMEM has pointed out that the real crew names have been out for some time (though unconfirmed by the NTSB), and, in fact, KTVU reported them on Wednesday.

UPDATE 2: The NTSB has admitted it is partially responsible for this, claiming that a summer intern is to blame:

Another update, now Asiana Airlines is suing KTVU over the mistake.

But considering how Asiana was responsible for 2 people dying and hundreds more getting injured. I don't think they have any room to judge.

Good! They should've done that on the day it happened instead of days afterwards.

It took so long because KTVU corporate parent COX Media launched a full-fledged investigation into the matter. Great details here: http://richliebermanreport.blogspot.com/2013/07/exclusive-saturday-night-massacre-at.html#comment-form (scroll to the top)

Once that airline was threatening legal action (which they later recanted), those suits in Atlanta had no other choice but to do an internal investigation. But they would've done it, even if the airline didn't threaten legal action in the first place.
