The one time I was in southern Oregon, in 2005, KOBI's logo was an interstate highway shield. I thought KDRV had the best product, but that wasn't saying much. They all looked outstanding compared to what I saw from KIEM in Eureka a few days later.

Still is:

Kobi5Logo.png

There's actually an interesting history behind it too (from KOBI Wikipedia page):

For many years, KOBI branded itself as "Channel 5M," with a logo showing a "5" on an interstate highway sign, reflecting the interstate that goes through the Medford area, Interstate 5. The interstate sign motif was later extended to KOTI and KRCR.

Yup. There's a promo somewhere in the NewsActive3 collection from the 70s in which they use the shield-5. "5M" and "7R" are references to the TV Guides of the era; as San Francisco had the important 5 and the 7, the Medford and Redding stations got suffixed.

Just saw a promo on WEAR....WFGX is getting a 9pm newscast starting August 12th.

Finally, WALA gets some competition at 9pm!

I imagine it will be Pensacola based, just like WEAR.  Could WJTC have something in the wings for Mobile by way of WPMI?

Unfortunately more tragic news for the folks at WATN (formerly WPTY) Memphis. Former sports anchor Corey Maclin was killed last night in a traffic accident. Maclin served as primary sports anchor for ABC 24/CW 30 for about 2 and a half years from 2010-2013. Maclin was far better known in Memphis as a wrestling promoter and announcer (in a city where that sport has been historically huge), and his tenure at ABC 24 was more of an experiment at WPTY's worst period of Newport ownership and just didn't work out that well, and he was let go just weeks before their recent relaunch.

Regardless of that, Maclin was still very respected in the community and comments on social media this morning reflect a big, big loss. This makes now 4 WPTY staff members that have unexpectedly died in the last 5 years.

Thoughts and prayers to the Maclin family and those at WPTY and elsewhere that knew him well.

OMG, Gray is about to have a SHELL???!!

TVNewsCheck have posted that News-Press & Gazette Company has announced that it has agreed to sell KJCT Grand Junction to this newly formed company, Excalibur Broadcasting, LLC for over $3M. It also states that other non-FCC licensed assets will be sold by Gray proper for $9M. Excalibur is ran by former Gray Regional VP & GM of leading station WSAZ 3.

This move will break that longtime sister-station relationship between KJCT & Colorado Springs' ABC station KRDO, since Pikes Peak owned the two stations in the early 80s.

That sure changes things in the speculation...maybe a sign that NPG is headed for the market, while Gray may be a buyer after all (they were heavily rumored to be for sale)? Although one station could be a blip, it could start a trend...

A shell for one station rarely happens unless it is clear that they are trying to start something...

I don't think the speculation shifts all that much. Let's remember eleven days ago NPG formed a shell to get KIDK from Fisher.

I still have a strong feeling that Gray and Raycom could form something together. But at this rate, anything can happen at this point.

And what do you know, this is NPG's first divestiture of a TV station in two decades.

Here's KJCT's release on the news.

I think it has more to do with the market, than anything else. GJ is market 185 and Hoak already runs CBS and FOX in town. Given the limited amount of ad revenue, it wasn't if KKCO and KJCT would pair up, it was when. It's getting really hard to have 3 unique shops in these markets any more.

Even Fisher and Belo sold out to other companies who shelled (NPG and Raycom, respectively). I understand the importance of SSA-JSAs in these smaller markets; they preserve some level of local news and make for more financially sustainable operations.

"Desert News Now" (what I call the future KYMA/KSWT in Yuma) should be interesting. Basically, it's Yuma's two heritage news operations, who had no competition but each other for about two decades, against KECY which has had bare minimum local news for almost a year and a half.

* KFMB 8 (CBS) morning weathercaster Vanessa Bezic has been missing in action for more than a month now. The station is being tight lipped on her whereabouts and her bio is still on their website. In an interesting move, former morning meteorologist Natasha Stenbock is back with KFMB filling in on the morning show (She used to do weather in the morning from 2005-2009).

Vanessa is no longer with the station, and Natasha was recently tapped as her full-time replacement. Word is Vanessa cleaned out her desk one day and left without saying anything, then eventually broke her contract. She's the second on-air personality to leave the morning show in recent weeks. Feature reporter Nathalie Basha left the station in May, 4 months after being hired. Alicia Summers has taken on her duties.

Wow, that is very strange. A lot of people were posting on KFMB's facebook page asking about her whereabouts for the last two months or so and the station made no mention of it, and when the talent was asked they simply replied that she was off for a while. It's strange for an on-air personality to just simply vanish from one day to the next, hopefully everything goes well for her. Natalie Basha was surprising as well, as you mentioned she had only been there for a few months (3 at the most?). Natasha seems to be well liked by Dan and Nichelle as well as the public, so that's a step in the right direction. If only they could get rid of that crappy music and graphics. When the average joe starts to complain on facebook that your music is bad, then it's really bad.

Eric Phillips has migrated up 85 from WSB to sister WSOC in Charlotte to be their weekend anchor.

Anjanette Flowers, noon anchor at WCNC, just had a baby girl. They announced it yesterday and showed a picture on the air at the end of the noon news.

And WBTV traffic reporter/part time noon weather girl Katie Garner's last day is today. She will be at the Columbus ABC station...sadly a Sincrap station. They're still looking for another traffic person.

WDAF Catches ‘Royals Fountain Lady’ in VO Before Her Famous and Illegal Romp

By Kevin Eck on August 6, 2013 4:51 PM

WDAF_08-05-2013_18.10.37.jpeg

When Jessica McCoy crawled into a fountain at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium while the hometown Royals were playing the Minnesota Twins, she may have stumbled into viral video history but was still safely out of TVSpy’s local TV jurisdiction.

But when an alert anchor and producer at Kansas City FOX affiliate WDAF figured out McCoy had appeared in a VO the station did before her fountain appearance, we had to get involved.

Last night, McCoy, dubbed the “Royals Fountain Lady,” was arrested after spending a few minutes exploring the stadium fountains during a game. Video of the incident surfaced on the web, particularly on Deadpsin.com. WDAF producer Rob Zerwekh was alerted by anchor Nick Vasos that McCoy looked like a woman seen in reporter Brad Underwood‘s VO from the night before (pictured).

Zerwekh tweeted the news out this morning saying, “@Deadspin We may have had the Kauffman Stadium fountain lady in pregame VO yesterday here at FOX 4. Same? Different?”

McCoy was booked into jail for trespassing, resisting arrest and soliciting an officer. Kansas City Police said she propositioned officers in an attempt to avoid charges. Zerwekh told TVSpy, McCoy repeatedly denied the solicitation charges when asked about it by Underwood who caught up with her after being released.

“We talked to you yesterday when you guys were tailgating,” said Underwood who followed McCoy as she was leaving jail. “What happened last night?”

“I was drunk. What do you think happened?” McCoy said. When Underwood asked if her friends were going to pick her up, she replied, “We’ll see if I have any left.”

Here’s the photo progression of McCoy’s night courtesy of Deadspin. From left to right, WDAF story/fountains/mugshot tweeted out by KC police:

founatin_three.jpg

I like how you can clearly see the drink in the second photo and for her honesty that she was drunk. :D
