Well, just in time for hockey season, both Rogers Sportsnet and CBC Sports have new looks.

CBC's previous look was very blue and silver, but the new graphics use a more blue and black color and have a signifigantly greater amount of animation. It is definitely a great upgrade from their previous look for sure, finally being more in line with some of their American counterparts. They've also joined the recent trend of of networks dropping score banners for boxes. The new look also uses the DIN font (as made famous by countless NBC O&O looks) instead of Heveltica everywhere (CBC News has liked that font a lot over the past few years)

Also, "regional" sports network Rogers Sportsnet has gone through a major re-branding too, becoming just Sportsnet, and getting a new look from Troika Design Group. Their new look is a drastic multi-platform makeover, with new logos (which everyone is saying looks like the Buffalo Bills logo), sets, and theme music just about everywhere. The Troika site has a montage of the new look, its a lot more blueish too (but its more of a steel blue, augmented by team colors when needed), all the 3D sequences look quite amazing (some people on Twitter have compared it to SportsCenter (which is well, obvious, since Troika did that one too).

However, with the new look it almost seems like they spent all their resources on the 3D stuff ... and then wimped out on the 2D elements. I was expecting something good there (given what they did for NBC), but what we got was this strange black and silver which looks more like an evolution of their old one... just seems too large and and plain. Lack of team logos or colors just makes it drab.

Sportsnet is also using a lot more orchestral-based music now; their new NHL theme music is probably one of the best I've ever heard. I hope someone posts it soon, because its actually quite good.

Really clean look for CBC and SportsNet

In other news, TSN still can't seem to decide on a look. Most of the network still uses their previous look (which is mainly red, white, and grey with some yellow accents), But, it had been using this red and white "glossy" scorebar here and there for a while now alongside the old graphics, its MLS games have used much of the exact graphics from ESPN (well, for intros and the scoreboard, and often with the wrong font), and its even been using ESPN's current BottomLine style.

But, for their coverage of Skate Canada, we're finally seeing the rest of the look that goes along with it. It's actually rather slick; its a lot more glossy, the new fonts are clean, and they're going on a lot more with the "curved parallelogram" motif. And finally, we're also getting 16:9 telecasts out of them too! (most of the Bell channels have phased in letterboxing for HD programs recently. TSN however, had only been letterboxing U.S. broadcasts in the format, such as from Fox and ESPN) My only real concern, is that I personally think that the red gloss they're using on the L3's is a little too harsh looking. Maybe follow ESPN's lead and change the color based off the team/country?
